Derek is absolutely right. Some fireplaces and chimneys are ultra light, some very heavy. Each situation must be considered separately.

It varies, you can use between 2-4 piers for a fireplace. It all depends on how heavy and how big the fireplace is. It also depends if it is a wood framed stucture or concrete and if its concrete how deep in the earth the foundation is.
